HOW DO I KNOW THE SECRETS TO BUSINESS SUCCESS?
Are you following someone else's dream for you?
I didn't start out as a success in business. I got there the hard way. No, this isn't a hard luck story, but it is a short story of real work, constant development and education, and never giving up. I never set out to own my own business. But having spent long years in hotel management and butting up against countless bosses and bending a whole lot of corporate policies and protocols, it was the only logical choice. And working for a corporation meant I lived at their beck and call (does this sound familiar?) This meant moving companies, cities, and states every 8 months! It sure didn't leave me much of a life and after five years, I quit. This time I followed my passion (bet you know what that's like!) Hotel management had been my Mom's dream for me, my business was all about following my creative passion and talent.
Finding your purpose and your passion!
I had saved just enough to head back to school and work a full time job in my field of choice. I was on fire! I loved my new direction. The only tricky part was I didn't have a mentor to show me the ropes. Not to mention I jumped in with $70K in credit card debt, no clients/customers for my first 90 days, and I was doing it all myself and making a lot of mistakes along the way.
The big wake up call was that suddenly I had to market, the places I worked at had all done that for me. My Field of Dreams vision, you know “build it and they will come,” didn’t have the Hollywood ending I was looking for. I worked a lot of nights and weekends in jobs I didn't love to make ends meet in the beginning. From running the hot sweaty dish machine at a local catering facility to teaching evening education classes after a full day in my business, and putting in regular 7 day weeks and 15 hour days. I sacrificed at least five years before I took a real vacation!
Best Kept Secret and Lifetime Demand
I learned quickly that I needed to master the art of self promotion to prevent myself from becoming a Best Kept Secret. I never liked to sell or pitch, but I loved to EDUCATE, CONNECT, RELATE, EXCITE and CLOSE. I also enjoyed the benefits of lifetime demand with clients returning for future work and my keen ability to stay in touch, kept their excitement up and their interest fueled. Prosperity flowed and I created a business that served the whole of my life, and stopped swallowing me whole. I finally got real and regular vacations and time for friends and family.
The very definition of a successful business is one that allows you to enjoy the whole of your life, instead of one that swallows you whole!
